Week of Nov. 21

Hi everyone!  My blog post has to do with the common misconception that many people who are not teachers have about our jobs and what it actually entails to be an educator.  As we all know through our own experiences or conversations with other teachers, many people think that we play all day, get out early, have several days off including the summer, and we just laugh all day.  Even as interns we know that teaching isn't what people perceive it to be.  Not only are we responsible for teaching students curriculum, rules/routines, and provide social and emotional support, but we also need to be there for our students in other ways too.  Many times teachers are the ones who teach students the most basic skills, such as tying their shoes or zipping their coats (I spend a lot of time in Kindergarten!).  We all know that this job is difficult in many ways, especially when you're trying to get through to the most difficult students with tough upbringings.  We also have one of the most rewarding jobs too!  We get to show kids that learning can be fun.  We teach them to be active community members.  We teach them to be sympathetic and understanding.  We teach them to follow their dreams.  We teach them that no dream is too big or small.  Sometimes that's all they need to be successful!

Below is a cute poem that basically sums up many things that teachers do, and reminds us that our jobs can be hard at times, but our passion and love for teaching is what we need to lean on to keep us going!  Enjoy (:

  1. What a cute poem Stef! As I'm sure it does for everyone, it infuriates me when we aren't treated with the respect we deserve. Teaching is so multifaceted, people who are not in the profession don't even realize how much we truly do. We not only teach our students curriculum, we teach them how to be respectful and caring citizens in our society. We do so much more than "just" teach. I love the line that says "I'm there for them in each and every way" and how being a teacher "comes from the heart and it's a passion you see." It is this passion that we bring into our classrooms day in and day out- no matter how tired we may be!

  2. I could not agree with you more. So much of what we do as educators is over looked. The meetings, the data collecting, the conferences, the professional days, the long hours before and after school...oh yeah and teaching each student, at different levels, with different needs, and different challenges. No big deal...it really makes me laugh.

I love the poem you posted. It really lays it all out there in an attempt to put all of the hard work we do into perspective. I was reading an article the other day about life in Finland. In their country the three top career paths that get the most respect and are the highest paid are doctors, lawyers, and teachers. Pretty mind blowing when you look at how we are treated here.

  3. Hi Stef! This poem is so heartwarming and such a great save for those infamous bad days. We do so much more than people realize during our very short day, it's no wonder we come home exhausted! Since holidays are famous for family members asking how our plans are coming along, it was nice to be able to say we are almost done, and almost ready to apply for our own job and teaching career. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving week!

  4. Stef, I LOVE this poem. It is really so true. You see so many things and hear so much today about teachers and how its such a "nice and easy" profession, but they obviously don't know all that goes into teaching. Its such a great message for all the teachers out there, as well as the people who are not teachers and don't understand its importance. Without teachers, no other profession would exist, and in my opinion, what could be more important or influential than that?! Teachers really get a bad rep and that needs to change!! We have to show the world how much really goes into teaching, and how important of a role we play in each and every child's life. It is so nice to say that we are making such a difference in the world, and not just making a salary. Thanks for sharing!

  5. Hi Stef! I loved reading this poem and totally agree with its message. It's so true that teachers do not receive enough credit for all that they do. People first think of teachers having summers off and shortened work days, however they overlook the true impact that teachers have on the lives of the students. Like Allie said above, I can't imagine a profession that is more important and influential!

  6. Nice post Stef - it really highlights the lesser known aspects of the job. This year has definitely been indicative of all the things touched on within this poem - definitely been drying tears and tying shoes! Obviously the job entails so much more, but I really cannot wait to have a class of my own. Really interested to see where everyone ends up!

  7. This poem reminded me of the video that Marisa posted. We don't MAKE a lot of money, but we MAKE a difference and MAKE memorable learning experiences. We don't JUST teach curriculum. We teach, we guide, we care (too much sometimes), we comfort, we laugh, we cry, we play, we assess, and we put in (even as interns) more hours than any normal 9 - 5 job. Thinking, worrying, correcting, developing... our job never ends at 3 o clock (or 5)!

  9. What a great post! I love this poem as well as yours and everyone else's interpretation of it. I completely agree that there is SO much more to being a teacher than most people think. There has been times where I've been told by people that I simply go to work to "play with kids all day" which we all know could not be more far from true. In my opinion, it takes a very special person to be a teacher because we must wear several "hats" throughout the day and we take on a lot more than we can handle sometimes, but we do it for our love for teaching these amazing kids and to make a positive difference in their lives, NOT to play games all day long! (Wouldn't that be nice) ;)

  10. Stef this poem says it all! Being a teacher is more than just educating students. As a teacher you need to be a multi-talented and flexible person for every student. Filling the job of many different people that students interact with on a daily, for example a nurse, a caregiver, and a wardrobe stylist and many more! This is definitely something not just any person can walk into a classroom and being to do you have to be a special kind of person to be a teacher!
