Week of 11/7

Hi everyone!

I decided to post a quote, too!  I found this great quote, which I have seen before, but never stopped to think about until recently.  This quote means a lot to us as future teachers, realizing the differences in learning styles and learning speeds from our students within our classrooms.  It is important to recognize that no student is the same, and that teaching one concept in one way during one period of time will only benefit some students in the class, not all.  Students need different instruction that fits their learning needs and learning speeds.  I thought that this was a good quote for all of us to think about and keep in the back of our minds during our futures in teaching.

  1. Nice quote Allie, it's a good reminder to us of what we already know- all students are capable of learning. If there's anything we've learned throughout our coursework it's that we should hold the same expectations for all of our students- to do their absolute best. It's up to us to make this happen :)

  2. I love this quote, Allie! I feel like it really summarizes what we have learned over the past four semesters in this program! It is critical that we be mindful about how to best teach to each student in our classroom so that all students may experience success!

  3. I agree with Katelyn! This quote shines light on everything we have learned this past year! Not every student learns the same way, and sometimes students learn at different paces. It's our jobs to make sure that each child receives the appropriate instruction, and they learn to persevere when the learning gets tough!

  4. I really like this quote. I feel like one of the best things that have happened in education is that we are realizing that differentiation needs to happen and that all students have the ability to learn. Although it is important and makes teaching for affective, it also makes teaching much more difficult than it used it be. Having a mindset like this quote, I feel, is really important for teachers to remember. It will happen, it just takes time.

  5. Our jobs would be boring (easier, but boring) if they all learned things the same day and in the same way! Differentiation is so important and while it can be challenging sometimes, out students certainly need it. This quote is something that we all need to remember in our own classrooms.

  6. Allie, I like this quote as well. I feel as an intern I've seeing more and more ways to differentiate. In my experience I see the large gaps that occur in classrooms and am able to receive materials from classroom teachers who are willing to share their materials. This is going to be useful when building my future classroom. However, I've seen the veteran teachers have a harder time differentiating. I'm not sure if this is because of change in education but I feel that differentiating can me as small a verbally giving the directions instead of having the students read the directions them self. As future educators we will all educate all students because we were properly prepared to do so!

  7. I'm certainly grateful that teachers on an individual level recognize this as truth. Too bad the policies set by state and national education boards are not reflective of this same mentality. I truly wonder what the face of our occupation will look like some 20, 30, even 40 years down the road when we are retiring. I wonder if the general consensus will be that of "what were we thinking?" Not to sound pessimistic...just genuinely curious.

  8. Such a great quote, Allie! This is perfect to hang somewhere in our future classrooms to remind ourselves that it is our job to make sure we are differentiating our lessons to reach all our students on their learning levels. As we get to know our students we will have an understanding of how they learn best, and how we can best help them. After talking with teachers this past week one teacher stated how important it is for us to keep trying strategies over and over until we find one that is successful. Some teachers stated how when strategies don't work, teachers are eager to recommend them for outside support, rather than working with the student within the classroom to find success. Making sure we try everything we can, and create an environment for all our students to learn, inside their own classroom is key!

  9. I agree that this is another awesome quote! It reminds me of Leslie's post in the message that it portrays. The message that this shows us is that every student learns differently, which is SO important when being a teacher in today's society. We have discussed in class several times, the multiple intelligences that student's have and the importance of incorporating each of these intelligences into our instruction in different ways. By doing this, we are demonstrating to the student's that we understand that everyone learns differently and because of that, you are going to implement learning in a variety of ways.

This quote also reminds me of the different "menus" we have discussed in class to allow students demonstrate their mastery of different concepts. These "menus" provide the students with a variety of choices to demonstrate their thinking, which will also enhance their engagement.
